Finland has tiptoed into another decade of military hand-holding with Israel, quietly extending their cooperation pact until 2034. The whole thing is shrouded in so much secrecy you’d think Helsinki was plotting the next Bond film, not just buying a few missiles. Meanwhile, as this news broke, Finland decided to dump UNRWA at the end of the year, tossing Israel a political bouquet and making sure its own defence deals stay nice and cosy. Around the same time, however, Finland has announced that after the current funding agreement with UNWRA expires by the end of this year, it will not be signing a new of those. And Israel is very happy about that because, of course they are. This is absolute music to the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s ears because UNWRA, of course is not just about distributing food, is it? It runs schools and hospitals, and above all, it keeps that label of Palestinian refugee alive, which is not small irritation to the Israeli government, who would very much like to see that label consigned to the history books along with all the people and the facts. And certainly, as well as all the money that UNWRA gets.
