The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been without external power for more than a week and has enough diesel fuel to run its generators for 10 days, the International Atomic Energy Agency said on Aug. 29. The International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, said emergency diesel generators are supplying the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant with the electricity needed to maintain essential nuclear safety and security functions. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stressed the importance of ensuring sufficient diesel fuel supplies at the site. Since Aug. 20, the plant’s diesel generators have been supplying electricity, including to pumps that cool all six reactors and their spent fuel pools. The IAEA added that it was working to establish another localized ceasefire zone to facilitate repairs to the Ferosplavna-1 power line and restore external power to the plant as soon as possible.
