Stop the War Coalition

Newsletter 14/08/26

Trade unions are building the fight against militarism and war and we must support them.

Last year, the UCU and sister unions won a historic vote at TUC Congress: that workers’ money should fund jobs, pay and public services, not weapons and war.

The UCU is going back to Congress next month to build on that victory and demand investment in education, manufacturing and a fairer, greener future not based on the arms industry. Watch UCU general secretary Jo Grady explain why.

We urge all our supporters to sign and share the UCU petition as soon as possible.

The UCU’s campaign comes after 10 trade union general secretaries called on the new prime minister to assert maximum pressure on the US president to end the war in the Middle East. Their letter pointed to research showing that the US’s attacks on Iran have undone the marginal improvements to UK living standards made since 2024.

Stop the War will be at the TUC in September. Watch out for updates about what we will be doing.

Tomorrow: Shut Down US Bases – Protest at RAF Fairford

Stop the War and CND, along with Iranians Against War and Fairford Action, will be protesting tomorrow (Saturday 15 August) outside RAF Fairford to demand an end to its use by the US military. More details here.

By allowing the US’s biggest bombers to launch from Fairford, Britain is participating in Trump’s brutal, illegal war of choice on Iran. We will be there in numbers tomorrow to tell Andy Burnham that this collusion has to stop. It is deeply dangerous and has next to no support in the country.

Youth Strike Against War

We will be joining students and young people from across Europe and beyond on Friday 20 November in striking, protesting and holding assemblies and rallies to say no to war and militarism.

The youth strike day of action is part of the international weekend against war and conscription. If you’re a student and want to get involved, get in touch with the office to find out how.

We know it’s August, but there’s a lot of organising to do during this hot summer for the key calls that came out of the international anti-war conference in June.

Save the dates, book coaches for the 10 October Palestine demo, pass the model resolution in your union and trades council branches and do what you can in your groups and communities to build for them:

10 October
– International day of demonstrations for Palestine.

 30 October
– International day of dockworkers’ action.

 20-22 November
– International weekend against militarism and conscription.
