As we remember and mourn the twin atomic tragedies at Hiroshima and Nagasaki once more, a forgotten 6-minute animation reminds us why we can never use nuclear weapons again, writes Linda Pentz Gunter.

The power of simple imagery

It lasts all of 6 minutes and was shown in 1956, but A Short Vision delivers a searingly effective condemnation of nuclear war. Using simple, primitive but movingly beautiful illustrations, two British filmmakers delivered a warning so powerful that Ed Sullivan showed it on his CBS variety show, twice, as “a plea for peace”. The eerily haunting music, the depiction of animal suffering as well as human, and the matter-of-fact narration, add to the film’s impact, which sadly hasn’t lost its relevancy and should be widely shown today. READ MORE
