(BAES) shipyard in Barrow following the announcement that funding has been committed to begin the fourth major production phase of the UK’s Dreadnought Class submarine programme. A contract worth £5.9bn has been agreed by the government and BAES, the Defence Nuclear Enterprise
(DNE) industry partner responsible for submarine production from its shipyard in Barrow, the home of UK submarine building. Further investments are set to be committed to Rolls-Royce Submarines in Derby and the wider supply chain across the UK. The DNE supports more than
6,000 UK companies in the supply chain and backs about 47,000 UK jobs.

Defence has been in UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s sights, as his relentless policy crusade continues. Burnham’s used a recommitment of investment in updating the Trident nuclear submarine programme to repeat his promise of reindustrialising Britain. Questions linger, though, about whether he’ll commit to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence by 2030.

NAVAL investment at Faslane is set to get a further boost from the next generation of submarines being built, says the new PM. Andy Burnham was visiting the yard in Barrow-in-Furness when he touted the benefits to the whole of the UK from an £8.4 billion investment in nuclear submarines. He said the new Dreadnought class deterrents would deliver jobs and opportunities, including 22,000 apprenticeships by 2035.HMNB Clyde currently has 5,000 workers supported by the UK’s “Defence Nuclear Enterprise”, and who will benefit further down the pipeline from the investment. The money comes on top of the recent £15.1bn to upgrade the base. Secretary of State for Scotland Douglas Alexander said: “This investment shows the best of Britain – working together to defend the country. Built in the UK, the nuclear submarine will be part of the crucial defence assets based in Scotland – making Britain safer at home, stronger abroad and deliver a defence dividend for Scottish communities.

Rolls-Royce boost confirmed as Derby gets Dreadnought submarine investment. Around 4,000 people are employed in the city at the company’s Raynesway site. Nuclear reactor cores manufactured in Derby will power four new Dreadnought submarines which have been confirmed by the Government in a new £8.4 billion defence investment.

In the latest of his blitz of policy announcements since taking office less than two weeks ago – a big one this time, involving £8.4bn – Prime Minister Andy Burnham stressed the jobs benefits as well as the defence and security importance of renewing Britain’s nuclear deterrent.
On a visit to Barrow, Burnham said (according to a pre-release): “Keeping this country safe is the first responsibility of any government – but security is not only about what we build, it is about who builds it, and who benefits from it. The submarines produced in Barrow will protect Britain for decades to come, and the 47,000 jobs and apprenticeships will change lives both in this town and in dozens of places like it.
