Palestine Solidarity Campaign: WRITE to your councillors

Labour’s catastrophic results in the May elections put the final nails in Keir Starmer’s premiership. While establishment pundits have tried to ignore the facts, we know that Palestine was a major factor in this result.

PSC put Palestine on the ballot paper in the elections, where we called on all candidates to Pledge for Palestine.

In the local elections in England, more than 2,200 council candidates made the pledge and more than 600 were elected.

After the elections, we teamed up with Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland to commission polling to discover the extent to which Labour’s policy on Palestine had cost them votes.

The results were striking.

The vast majority of voters who abandoned Labour went to other parties of the left and centre. Our polling found that more than half of these voters (53%) said Labour’s policy on Palestine was a factor in their decision to abandon Labour.

We also found that more than two-thirds (67%) of these voters support local councils divesting from companies complicit in Israel’s crimes. This really matters.

Our research has found that Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) funds invest more than £12.2 billion in companies complicit in Israel genocide, apartheid and ethnic cleansing, including in arms manufacturers that supply weapons used to murder Palestinians.

Already, more than 30 local councils have taken a stand in support of divestment from complicit companies.

We need more people to urge their local councils to end their complicity in Israel’s atrocities and to stand up for Palestine.
