Japan Council against A and H Bombs (Gensuikyo)
Dear Prime Minister,
The Japan-U.S. summit talks scheduled for March 19 at the White House in Washington, D.C. will have a significant impact not only on bilateral relations but also on the peace and security of the Japanese people and on world peace. We request that Ms. Takaichi, the Prime Minister of sovereign Japan, urge President Trump to address the following points.
1. To demand that President Trump immediately cease the attack on Iran, which violates the UN Charter and international law and to refuse any military cooperation related to the attack on Iran (such as the dispatch of Self-Defense Forces).
U.S. President Trump has publicly declared, “I don’t need international law,” and following the military attack on Venezuela, he carried out with Israel a large-scale unprovoked attack on Iran on February 28. This is an unlawful act in violation of the UN Charter and international law, which is absolutely unacceptable.
Operations of US forces from the bases in Japan to the Middle East have nothing to do with the defense of Japan, but are exclusively for the purpose of unilateral attack of aggression. As a nation with the Constitution that renounces war, Japan must refuse any military cooperation with the US attack on Iran.
2. To reject all demands related to Japan’s military expansion and increased defense spending, and make no commitments whatsoever.
The Trump administration, through the “National Defense Strategy” and other documents, is openly pressing for Japan to increase its defense spending to 5% of GDP. This path will lead to the destruction of the very basis of the livelihoods of citizens and peace, and heighten military tensions. You must reject all demands related to military expansion and increased defense spending, and make no commitments whatsoever in this regard.
3. As the prime minister of the world’s only country to have suffered atomic bombings during wartime, to call on the Trump administration to commit itself to the complete prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons. Under no circumstances should Japan announce its participation in the Trump administration’s “Golden Dome” space defense initiative. Ahead of the April NPT Review Conference, to urge the five nuclear weapon states to make sincere efforts to implement the agreement they have reached to accomplish complete elimination of their nuclear arsenals.
On February 5, the New START treaty between the United States and Russia expired. With this, all nuclear arms control treaties between the two countries have been lost. Concerns are arising about unconstrained nuclear arms expansion between the U.S. and Russia. The hands of the Doomsday Clock, which symbolically indicates the remaining time until humanity’s extinction, have been set to 85 seconds—the nearest to midnight since 1947.
We must fully embrace the desire of the Hibakusha, who have denounced the inhumanity of nuclear weapons and have called for their prohibition and elimination. As the prime minister of the world’s only country to have suffered atomic bombings in wartime, you must strongly press for the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons.
