Sir Ed Davey’s call for the UK to develop a fully independent nuclear weapons system represents a dangerous and irresponsible shift in Liberal Democrat policy. It risks committing Britain to a hugely expensive expansion of its nuclear arsenal, which would cost hundreds of billions of pounds that would inevitably come at the expense of public services, climate action, and efforts to tackle poverty and inequality. At a time of rising global tensions, this is a move away from de-escalation and disarmament.

As a party with a strong tradition of supporting multilateral disarmament and international law, the Liberal Democrats must not go down this path without challenge. That is why it is so important that Liberal Democrat MPs hear directly from their own constituents.

By writing to your Liberal Democrat MP, you can send a clear message that this proposal is unacceptable and must be opposed.

Stop Bombing Iran! End use of British bases!

As we enter Day 18 of the US/Israeli illegal war on Iran, these countries continue their bombing campaigns, with the death toll mounting to over 1,400 people – including women and children – and nearly 19,000 wounded. Israel continues to attack Southern Lebanon, with over 850 people killed and thousands injured. Iran is continuing its retaliation, targeting US bases, energy supplies and other economic targets, resulting in more deaths and injuries. Iran’s blockade of the Straits of Hormuz continues, worsening the global economic crisis. European countries and Britain have so far appeared to rule out providing military support to assist Trump’s reckless plans to militarily destroy Iran’s blockade. However, Britain is still allowing the US to use military bases like RAF Fairford for huge B1 and B52 bombers to attack Iran’s missile sites. The Ministry of Defence has also reported that RAF Typhoon and F35 jets continue to carry out military operations in Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan and the Eastern Mediterranean.  

With every day risking worsening escalation and a further expansion of a regional war, it is vital that we keep up the pressure on the British government to end its support for this illegal war.
