France slashes renewable energy targets, expands nuclear power with new
law. France is this week set to pass by decree a new energy law slashing
the country’s renewable energy targets and massively expanding nuclear
power production. The law change comes as a relief for state-run
electricity provider EDF, which had been mandated to close some of its
nuclear plants and is struggling to compete with price pressure from
European solar and wind power producers.

France will boost nuclear energy and push for faster adoption of electric
vehicles to cut its reliance on fossil fuels by 2035, as European countries
become even more divided over the direction of climate policy. France’s
long-delayed energy strategy released on Thursday counts on higher nuclear
power output from its 57 reactors, the largest fleet in Europe. It pared
back the more ambitious solar and wind expansion outlined in draft
proposals, after fierce debate about the financing of new renewable energy
projects versus support for more nuclear power. Under the revised energy
plans, the French government aims to reduce fossil fuels’ share of
overall energy consumption from 60 per cent in 2023 — when it first
launched the review — to 40 per cent by 2030 and 30 per cent by 2035.
