Last year, the government proposed an extreme amendment to the Crime and Policing bill which would give police new powers to restrict protests based on their so-called ‘cumulative disruption’. This month it will be debated in the House of Lords and we have organised an in-person briefing for MPs and Peers this Wednesday. Will you ask your MP to attend?
Write to your MP Instead of ending its complicity in Israel’s crimes, the government continues to provide Israel with military, political and economic support, whilst simultaneously escalating its attempts to suppress solidarity with Palestine. Before the bill returns to the House of Commons, we need to make sure MPs know that their constituents are outraged by the government’s increasingly authoritarian attempts to crack down on protests and shield itself and Israel from accountability. Taking inspiration from the unbreakable resilience of the Palestinian people, we know the best way to push back against repression is to keep on campaigning. Together, we have built one of the largest and most sustained protest movements in British political history – a history that tells us no protest movement has every brought about change through one demonstration.
The campaign for women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement, and the campaign against apartheid in South Africa all relied on the cumulative impact of repeated protests over many years. It is crucial that we have as many MPs and Peers attending our in-person briefing on Wednesday 7 January to build opposition to the government’s attempts to stop us marching. Will you write to yours today?
Write to your MPThe government’s discriminatory attempts to silence protests for Palestine, including the latest plans to criminalise chants and slogans, will not stop us. Write to your MP today and join our next national demonstration in central London on the 31 January.
In solidarity,
