Dear TPNW advocates,
Thank you to everyone who participated in – and spoke at – our ICAN-UK meeting on Tuesday, and hope to see you in the New Year!
We heard excellent updates from Nuclear Information Service, LABRATS, Lakenheath, Scottish CND and Secure Scotland, and decided to hold the next zoom meeting on Wednesday 7th January at 1.00 – 2.30 pm. The meeting will focus on planning and activities for the Fifth Banniversary of the TPNW’s entry into force on 22 January.
Below I’m forwarding materials and ideas from ICAN’s staff team for ways to celebrate and highlight the importance of the TPNW.
Please take a look and share these ideas and materials with your organisations and activist groups. Are there things you can do locally or through media outreach, social media? Can you contact the local councillors and MPs that have signed pledges or aligned with the TPNW and reach out to others? Even a small group with a banner about the TPNW can get a photo and message out on social media, or a pic and article into local media…
Campaigning for nuclear disarmament in the UK is never easy. Nuclear weapons are being ratcheted up by the UK and other nuclear-armed governments in the wake of Russia’s nuclear-armed invasion of Ukraine, but that’s all the more reason to challenge the expansion of nuclear roles and weapons in 2026. This will be a critical year, with the NPT Review Conference for 4 weeks from 26 April, and the first ever TPNW Review Conference for one week from 30 November.
I hope you will join our next zoom meeting on January 7th so that we can share ideas, discuss the Banniversary, and support each other to take the nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament Treaties forward in 2026.
However you choose to celebrate the get-togethers during Midwinter Solstice, we wish you all peace, warmth and hope, and look forward to seeing you in the New Year,
Gari, Janet, Lauren, Magali, Rebecca and the ICAN-UK team.

Hi everybody,
We’re coming up on the end of 2025- with a major focus on the 80th anniversaries. As we look ahead to 2026, let’s kick off the year with activities to bring attention to the only treaty that builds in justice for those harmed by nuclear weapons, and sets up the framework for nuclear abolition- the TPNW.
January can always be a bit of a bleak month, and with the way things are looking in some of the mainstream media conversations about nuclear weapons- we know that we need to remind people that the TPNW has reached a global majority, that countries are pushing back against nuclear weapons, and that this is a problem we can absolutely solve.
So, we put together some materials to help explain the power of the treaty, and the impacts its had in its first five years:
We’ve already heard about some great anniversary celebration plans- panels, school presentations, House of Dynamite viewings, political art, and even a choir performance. We’d love to hear more about what you are thinking about doing. (Thanks Janet for sharing the Scottish plans!!)
Because part of showing that we can solve the problem of nuclear weapons is by bringing people together to celebrate the successes we’ve had so far- and the TPNW going into force has been a major success.
It would be great to celebrate the day together- along with all of those who helped get us here (and we hope, will help us as we go forward).
We look forward to hearing from you!
