Eight prisoners associated with Palestine Action are currently on hunger strike, in protest over the repressive and inhumane conditions of their detention in British prisons. Several have been hospitalised and their health is deteriorating quickly, so they need urgent intervention.
Will you write your MP to ask them to speak up for the rights of these prisoners?
These prisoners, along with 24 others, are facing trial for allegedly taking action to prevent arms manufacturers from shipping weapons to Israel, used in its genocide against the Palestinian people. They are being held on remand, some of them for up to two years, without having been convicted of any crime; their communications with family and friends have been censored; and their right to a fair trial is being restricted, with some of the documents relevant to their defence withheld from their or their lawyers’ view. These conditions are completely unacceptable, and a violation of the prisoners’ basic human rights, which should be guaranteed in a democracy.
John McDonnell MP has tabled Early Day Motion (EDM) 2386 calling on the Secretary of State for Justice to intervene and make sure the prisoners’ conditions are improved and their rights are upheld. Email your MP and ask them to add their name to this important EDM.
The families of the imprisoned activists are working tirelessly to secure justice for them. We were honoured to have two family members of imprisoned activists speaking at our last national march for Palestine, to spread the word about their case and their demands. You can see excerpts from their speeches in the video below.
Watch the videoOver 70,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocide, including over 20,000 children. It is the perpetrators of that genocide, and the British politicians and companies arming them, who should be facing trial.Instead, the government has cracked down on those protesting against genocide and is now denying the rights of those who are imprisoned awaiting trial for what is hard to regard as anything other than political reasons.
The right to a fair trial, including reasonable bail conditions, is an absolute right that must be protected in a democratic society. The health of the hunger striking prisoners is deteriorating rapidly, so this situation is urgent. Please email your MP today and watch the video of hunger strikers’ family members discussing their case and their demands.
In solidarity,
