World beyond War: Meet Our New Europe Organizer!

I am Annachiara Canetta, the new first-ever Europe Organiser of World BEYOND War, based in the Netherlands. I am a researcher, activist and organiser connected to the anti-war, climate, and food sovereignty movements. I am passionate about building connections across different movements by highlighting how the war system diverts fundamental resources from all other struggles for environmental and social justice.

World BEYOND War is a global nonviolent movement founded in 2014 to abolish the institution of war and establish a just and sustainable peace, with all variety of nonviolent activism that moves the world in the direction of ending all war. In my role as the WBW Europe Organiser, I am here to support WBW chapters and affiliates across Europe through organising volunteer-led chapters, educational events, media work, and nonviolent activism. Moreover, I will be involved with intersectional movement building to strengthen anti-war efforts.

Europe is often perceived as a region of cooperation and peace, yet it continues to be impacted by violence and injustices, and to export wars and weaponry. The ongoing war in Ukraine, militarised borders, and increasing military spending are just some examples showing the structural issues still in the way of a peaceful and just Europe. The expansion of militarist policies in the continent are undermining long-term peace and diverting resources away from essential social welfare spending. Moreover, many companies in Europe are involved in arms production and trade that fuels conflicts in Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere, raising an urgent call for accountability.

In this context, there is a strong need for collective action and solidarity across borders. This is why we invite you to contribute to our work in a variety of ways:

• Starting a WBW chapter: In Europe, there are currently five chapters and more are being established. Chapters advance World BEYOND War’s mission to abolish war, by carrying out initiatives at the local level related to peace education, nonviolent activism, and media work. Visit the map and contact us if you would like to start a chapter, or to find out if a similar process is underway in your country.
• Becoming our affiliate: At WBW, we also work with partner organisations with whom we can build a common work agenda, cooperation, and solidarity, based on the initiatives, campaigns, and activities we promote. WBW provides a set of educational, organisational, and technical resources that we make available to our allies.
