One thing to say right at the outset is that there is apparently a debate going on inside the US security state about the US military and security doctrine. So we are going to learn something in the coming days and weeks more than we know now. There are lots of reports about a new national defence strategy to be unveiled. Some reports say that it calls for a retrenchment of American strategy. That would be interesting. That is actually necessary from the US point of view. The US is an overstretched and not very capable global empire. It has military bases in an estimated 80 countries …. Something around 750 to 800 overseas military bases … this is an overstretched empire …

…What has happened with the UN resolution (Gaza – Vote in UN November 17, 2025 ) that was suggested by the United States and Russia and China have decided not to veto the resolution. What’s your take of the behaviour of China and Russia?
Well it is hugely disappointing. This resolution was in a word an atrocity. This is a resolution adopted in violation of international law. … It was not in the Security Councils power to adopt many of the terms of this resolution. It was a proposal drafted by Donald Trump and his crownies … and adopted in total by all fifteen members the Security Council, 13 of which voted in favour and as you say two of which, permanent members of the council with veto power, declined to use their vetoes and merely obstained. …
Now why? I am told by diplomats it was the most extreme case of pressure deployed by Washington against member states to cajole them into supporting this resolution or at least not blocking it. … But then there were other factors. What the Americans did affectively was to threaten, as I said, to threaten that they would unleash the dogs of genocide completely again. That they would allow Israel with full US support to continue its assault on the Palestinian people. …
