News from Abingdon Peace Group

Posted: 17th November 2025

Dear APG supporters,
Remembrance Sunday in London was unusual this year in having 3 separate events all on the subject of wars. All were powerful events.
First up was the Alternative Remembrance Ceremony – you can see Mark Rylance’s contribution here: https://youtu.be/qq6DBRDEjIw and read about the whole thing on the Peace Pledge Union (PPU) website: https://www.ppu.org.uk/news/white-poppy-ceremonies-held-memory-all-victims-war-amid-soaring-casualties-worldwide
Second was the extraordinary MAW Remembrance Lecture which you can download as a pdf here: https://abolishwar.net/remembrance-lecture-2025/  A video will follow on the same page, but there is so much to chew over and think about in this talk “Ending Wars” that you may well want to read it slowly!
Thirdly was a moving “virtual cenotaph” projected on the side of Friends House by new charity “Every Casualty Counts” : https://www.quaker.org.uk/news-and-events/news/powerful-commemoration-of-every-life-lost-in-war

Do spend a little time looking at one or all of these, and let us know what you think!

And finally: if you are able to get out and about, notice of 2 events, one from Faringdon Peace Group, and another from Lakenheath Alliance for Peace:
December 3rd at 7.30pm in Friends Meeting House, Faringson: An eye-witness account of the flotilla to Gaza (details in a separate email)
November 29th LAP VIGIL12 noon ‘WELFARE not WARFARE
This vigil on the last Saturday in November is themed around Welfare not Warfare. The government’s purchase of hideously expensive F35 A jets is taking much needed funds away from social care and the NHS. There will be speakers from trade unions and other organisations to highlight this gross spending on weapons not welfare. Please come along and bring others and make your voice heard. Any queries please email  [email protected] (please do not reply to this email).

November 22nd CND conference in London

April 1 – 6 LAP April 2026 peace camp. Details of this and how to register will be circulated in the next Laplist email.
