Is your town next?

Right now, police forces up and down the country are using dangerous facial recognition technology that enables them to ID and track any one of us.

Walking past a camera is like showing your ID at a checkpoint. The Government must follow the example of other countries who have put laws in place around how facial recognition is used by police, with robust safeguards around our rights.

The Home Office told us that they will consider a legal framework to govern the use of facial recognition technology. We welcome this, but why are we continuing to see an increased rollout of this powerful technology without proper safeguards?

This dangerous technology is expanding. Facial recognition vans and cameras are being installed in more towns and cities, and we’ve mapped them. You can see where they’re being used on our new digital map.

Description of image

We don’t want to see facial recognition being used. But where it is, we need laws to ensure:

  • live facial recognition is not used without independent sign-off

  • police can only use live facial recognition for serious purposes where there is an urgent need

  • facial recognition watchlists only contain images strictly relevant to the purposes above

  • police give the public at least 14 days advance warning of live facial recognition deployments
