Going Nuclear Free: The Early History of the Nuclear Free Local
Authorities Introduction Forty-five years ago today, on 5 November 1980,
Manchester, the very city in which the atom was first split, became the
world’s first local authority to declare itself ‘nuclear-free’. This
declaration made by City Councillors proved to be the catalyst which led to
a worldwide movement of self-declared nuclear free local authorities and in
the UK to the establishment of the Nuclear Free Local Authorities. This
briefing highlights how that organisation came about.
