The NFLAs have welcomed the Remembrance Day announcement that the
Government has agreed to award the Nuclear Test Medal to gallant RAF
aircrew of 27 and 543 Squadrons and sailors aboard the Royal Fleet
Auxiliary vessel Sir Percivale who passed through French and Chinese
atmospheric nuclear tests in the Far East to carry out air sampling.
British personnel were ordered to fly or sail through the radioactive
clouds of over 40 atomic and nuclear atmospheric tests carried out by China
and France. The NFLAs have been strong advocates for recognition, justice
and compensation for Britain’s nuclear test veterans and their families,
and the latest announcement comes just a month after NFLA Chair, Councillor
Lawrence O’Neill, wrote to the new Veterans Minister, Louise
Sandher-Jones, calling for the eligibility criteria for the medal to be
extended to include these forgotten ‘sniffers’.
