Letter Paul Dorfman: The most radioactive particle to be recovered so far
from a beach near the Dounreay nuclear plant in Caithness has been found,
containing between one and two million becquerels (Bq) of radiation. This
translates to a dose rate of 20 millisievert (mSv) per hour – a measure
of potential damage to biological tissue. This is a significant. For
comparison, UK Public Health England calculate that on average people are
exposed to about 2.7 millisieverts (mSv) of radiation a year. Echoing
official radiation protection statements, Dr David Farquhar has suggested
that this ‘hot particle’ poses “no significant danger” to the
public. However, as former Secretary to the UK Govt scientific advisory
Committee Examining Radiation Risks from Internal Exposure (CERRIE), I can
say that this “reassurance” seems irresponsible.
