Austria Supports Our UPR Report on Nuclear Weapons in Belarus

Posted: 11th November 2025

Dear friends,

I’m deeply happy to share some truly important news. Our common UPR submission on Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus has found official support — and this time from Austria, a country with a long-standing commitment to peace and disarmament.

During the Universal Periodic Review of Belarus on 3 November 2025, Austria made the following recommendation to Belarus:

Austria #2: “Revert its support to nuclear rearmament by signing and ratifying the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).”

This is a historic moment — the first time Austria has raised the issue of the TPNW and nuclear rearmament in Belarus within the UN system. It means that the United Nations and its member states are beginning to recognize the nuclear militarization of Belarus as a real and urgent human rights and security problem.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to all our partners, colleagues, and allies who contributed to this achievement — through data, advocacy, persistence, and solidarity. This is a shared success of our entire peace and human rights community. I am very proud of you all.

I’m profoundly proud to be standing with all of you — to defend peace, resist militarization, and work for a nuclear-free Belarus and a safer Europe.

With appreciation and strength,
Olga Karach
