We strongly protest against President Trump’s announcement on the resumption of nuclear testing

On October 30, U.S. President Trump ordered Pentagon to resume nuclear testing. Amid the current tense international situation, this move will give spurs to the already dangerous nuclear-to-nuclear standoff as well as use of nuclear weapons. It runs counter to the worldwide efforts of Hibakusha and citizens to overcome the crisis. We strongly protest against President Trump’s order of the nuclear test resumption.

The resumption of nuclear testing infringes all the internationally agreed norms and treaties, including the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), the relevant UN General Assembly resolutions, the NPT’s undertaking of the total elimination of nuclear arsenals and the obligation of nuclear disarmament measures imposed on the nuclear weapons states, as well as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), which entered into force in 2021.

As a movement working in the country that actually suffered the use of nuclear weapons, we, together with the Hibakusha, demand the immediate withdrawal of the nuclear-test resumption order. We also strongly urge the U.S. to ratify the CTBT, implement the “unequivocal undertaking” to eliminate nuclear arsenals, and sincerely examine to join the TPNW.

The government of Japan, due to its subordination to the U.S. and servile diplomatic posture toward President Trump, has exposed its shameful inability to voice even one word to oppose the nuclear test resumption. In light of Japan’s Constitution and the will of the people, the government should strongly urge the U.S. to cancel its test resumption order and work in collaboration with the international community toward nuclear disarmament.  /end
