Two weekends ago, I stood on a dark sand dune near RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, listening to the Mediterranean crash onto Lady’s Mile beach. We were there to uncover how this quiet RAF base connects to the suffering in Gaza – just 200 miles away.
We knew from flight data that spy planes owned by an American company were flying from Akrotiri to Gaza on behalf of the RAF. But, since the tracker would only appear for a few minutes each day, we didn’t know for sure if the flights were still taking off - so we went to see for ourselves.
At 2:20 a.m., after hours of waiting, the plane’s engines roared to life. Our phones pinged, Crook12’s tracker had flashed on. Moments later, we filmed it taking off, confirming what no other journalists have: Britain is continuing to spy for Israel using its Cyprus air base.
Since then, the plane’s tracker has lit up on seven more nights. Officially, these missions support hostage searches, but evidence suggests they aid Israeli strikes that have killed civilians. Alongside RAF aircraft, these missions now number over 600 since December 2023. Yet only eight hostages have been freed by force, compared to 135 through ceasefire deals.
Our footage will appear in a new documentary out later this month on YouTube, you can also read the full article here.
