Write to Keir Starmer

This week, our movement inflicted a huge defeat on the government, with Labour Party conference finally acknowledging that Israel is committing a genocide in the Gaza Strip. With PSC support at every stage, Labour members and trade unions defied Keir Starmer and passed a historic motion in support of the rights of the Palestinian people.

We know that Keir Starmer will do everything he can to ignore the democratic will of party members. Write to him to demand he listens and finally acknowledges Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza and imposes comprehensive sanctions.

Labour Party policy now officially accepts the landmark UN Commission of Inquiry report confirming the reality of Israel’s genocide and demands the Government imposes comprehensive sanctions on Israel, including a full arms embargo.

PSC was centrally involved in achieving this outcome, working with trade union allies and ordinary Labour members to make sure the motion got to conference floor to be debated. This required tireless work from PSC staff and volunteers, but it was only possible because of the years and years of engagement we’ve done to build allies in the labour movement.

Now we need to consolidate our gains and use this moment to press Keir Starmer to abide by the policy that’s been passed. Peter, will you write to Keir Starmer?

The Labour leadership tried every trick in the book to prevent this decision from being reached. They ruled out motions, tabled their own watered down motion, and hand picked speakers in the debate who they knew supported their motion. It didn’t matter. The government motion was comprehensively voted down and the PSC-backed anti-genocide motion was decisively passed.

This victory creates a powerful new point of pressure, but we cannot assume that the government will listen. Write to Keir Starmer today to tell him to implement Labour Party policy by accepting that Israel is guilty of genocide and imposing a full arms embargo.

This defeat for the government only happened because of you and the growing movement in solidarity with the Palestinian people. After almost 2 years of Israel’s genocide, the tide is turning. More and more people are standing side-by-side with the Palestinian people and demanding their liberation. But we cannot stop here.
