Protect Cumbria’s Rivers from Sellafield’s Pollution

Lakes Against Nuclear Dump (LAND), supported by lawyers Leigh Day, is preparing a legal challenge against the Environment Agency’s approval of Sellafield’s plan to discharge 40 cubic metres of contaminated water every hour into the Rivers Calder and Ehen for the next seven years.
The Rivers Calder and Ehen are of huge ecological importance. The Calder, once a thriving braided river, has already been heavily altered and polluted by Sellafield. The Ehen, meanwhile, is designated as a Special Area of Conservation and home to 90% of England’s remaining freshwater pearl mussels, which depend on endangered Atlantic salmon.
LAND argues that Sellafield’s convenience should not come at the cost of permanent damage to Cumbria’s rivers. Funds are now being raised to cover legal fees, court costs and potential liabilities. Every contribution will go directly towards challenging the Environment Agency’s decision and giving the rivers a voice.
