Human Rights

Posted: 16th September 2025

Not a week goes by without another politician giving their view on the human rights frameworks that protect us all. These views often repeat misinformation while offering disingenuous solutions to very real problems.

The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and our Human Rights Act have been used as political footballs for too long. It serves some politicians and sections of the media to pretend that the Convention only intersects with issues like immigration, and not any other aspect of our day to day lives.

The truth is, it protects each and every one of us, often without us realising.

The Convention protects many of the rights that we cherish today, from our freedom of speech to protection against torture. And the Human Rights Act ensures public bodies respect those rights.

At Liberty, we remain vigilant against plans that put those protections at risk and undermine the very foundation of our basic freedoms.

Just as the ECHR protects us, we need to be here to return the favour. And so does our Government, which needs to come out front-footed in support of everything the Convention actually does for people if it is to have any hope of outmanoeuvring those who demand the UK leaves it.

If you’d like to hear more about our work in this area, please have a read of my article, Rewrite the Story or Risk It All: Labour’s Test on Human Rights.

The direction of travel in the UK may be unmistakeable, but the outcome is not inevitable. We are working hard to convince the Government to focus on protection rather than removal of rights and to tell a positive story about our rights.

There is all to play for – and Liberty, with your support, has a history of winning. It will take our combined strength and courage to push back.

With hope.
