This week we focus on India. Trump is punishing India for importing Russian oil but the US still imports even more Russian uranium. Meanwhile, authorities in India seek to weaken the country’s nuclear liability laws, putting the public in jeopardy.

India punished, Putin paid

President Trump has slapped 50% tariffs on India as punishment for importing Russian oil even as the US continues to import uranium concentrate from Russia and its neighbors Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, still under Russian influence for uranium transactions. Trump also accused India of not caring about the suffering of people in Ukraine under Russia’s “War Machine”, but bragged about his great friendship with Russian premier, Vladimir Putin, with whom he met last month in Alaska. READ MORE

A global call for peace

A network of civil society groups in India is campaigning to stop their government from amending important nuclear laws that would smooth the way for foreign investments and private corporate construction of new nuclear power plants, which they oppose. In a press conference (pictured), they also warned against the weakening of the nuclear liability law, whose cap for industry responsibility is already far too low. READ MORE
