HIROSHIMA & NAGASAKI, NEVER AGAIN
80th ANNIVERSARY ACTIONS
------------
* The Pentagon
------------
Early on the morning of August 6, over 30 peacemakers held a prayer service at the Pentagon to commemorate the 80th anniversary of U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Bill Frankel-Streit and Steve Baggarly, wearing sackcloth, walked to the main entrance where they poured ashes in front of one of the checkpoints. They stated, “We come because the story of nuclear weapons will have an ending and it is up to us what that ending will be. Will it be the end of nuclear weapons or the end of us? We must choose one.” Pentagon police rerouted workers to another entrance, and soon issued warnings to leave or face arrest. The two men remained and were taken into custody. They were charged with “disobeying a lawful order” and “preservation of property,” and given an October 16 court date.

Livermore Lab
------------
Around 100 people gathered at the Westgate entrance to Livermore Lab on the morning of August 6 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. After listening to speakers, participants joined in a “die-in” reenactment of the bombing, with bodies outlined in the street in front of the nuclear weapons lab. They then were led in a Japanese Tradition of Bon, performing symbolic dance steps in the road to remember the nearly quarter million dead of 80 years ago. Afterwards, nine people blocked the gate to the Lab. They were all cited and released.

Lockheed Martin
------------
On the afternoon of August 6, about 25 people gathered at the King of Prussia, Pennsylvania facility of Lockheed Martin to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and demonstrate against Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest war profiteer. The protesters stood side-by-side along the sidewalk, waving peace flags, carrying protest signs, and tolling the historic peace bell of the Brandywine Peace Community. Three of the activists crossed onto Lockheed Martin property to carry the message of no more war and no nuclear weapons directly to the company’s employees. Paul Sheldon, Bob Smith and Fr. Pat Sieber, OSF were moved off the property by police and cited for trespassing.

Bangor Trident base
------------
Early in the morning of August 11, 35 people demonstrated against Trident nuclear weapons in Washington state. Six of the peace activists blocked the entrance to the Trident nuclear submarine base, Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, in remembrance of the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They held posters with images of children who died in the August 1945 bombings, reading the names of each of the children and a description of the end of their life. The driver of one of the first cars to be stopped by the blockade shouted to the demonstrators, “Thank you for what you are doing – I hate my job.” All six blockaders were cited for violating RCW 46.61.250, Pedestrians on roadways, and released at the scene.
