In April, a former leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), Ian Blackford, sparked an internal debate in the SNP after urging the current party leadership to reconsider its long-standing support for unilateral nuclear disarmament: the policy that the UK will give up its nuclear weapons regardless of whether other nuclear weapon states do the same, in an op-ed printed in The Times.

Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference

Since the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entered into force in 1970, review conferences are held every five years for state parties to assess progress on national measures to implement its three pillars: nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Strategic Defence Review 2025

On June 2nd, the United Kingdom published its Strategic Defence Review (SDR). The UK’s nuclear deterrent was described as central to the announced increase in defence spending to 2.5% of GDP, the largest sustained increase since the end of the Cold War.

F-35A Fighter Planes and B61-12 Bombs

Ahead of the NATO summit in The Hague, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the acquisition of 12 U.S. F-35A fighter jets. These are “dual-capable” aircraft (DCA) meaning they can carry both conventional and nuclear munitions; with the latter referring specifically to the U.S. B61-12 gravity bombs.

Sellafield Nuclear Waste

A new report by the Public Accounts Committee finds that the removal of nuclear waste from ageing buildings at Sellafield – the UK’s most hazardous nuclear site – is progressing too slowly. The report warns that additional delays could significantly increase the already considerably high costs of the cleanup process.
