Today (Monday 28) is the most important day of this year’s Global Days of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS), with several events taking place all across the world.
SIPRI has just published new data on military spending for the year 2024, and the figures show very staggering growth in military spending, reaching $2.71 trillion, an increase of 9.4% compared to last year. The top 20 spenders have all increased their military spending, it is rising in all regions of the world, mainly Europe (17%) and the Middle East (15%). The biggest increase is that of Israel (+65%), explained by its ongoing genocide in Gaza, followed by Russia, with a 38% growth spurred by its invasion of Ukraine.
You can find the SIPRI fact sheet here.
For the occasion, our campaign is holding actions all across the world, including media work in Manila, Wellington, Rome and Barcelona.
To strengthen the impact of this, we’re also putting together a Social Media Storm.
It is time for us to join together and call on governments around the world to cut military spending, and put an end to wars and arms racing.
Visit our GDAMS Shared Folder for images, infographics, posting suggestions,
and other materials to use during the day on your social media.
We will be using these hashtags:

Let’s make our message go viral!
Together with the Transnational Institute (TNI) we’re preparing a series of infographics analysing military spending levels from differente perspectives (Global, NATO, EU, Israel, war profiteers…) like the one above. The’ll appear here shortly.
The 2025 GDAMS Appeal calls for an end to this reckless arms race through drastic reductions of military spending. It has so far garnered more than 100 endorsements from organizations from 30 different countries all across the world (the list will appear here shortly). Together, we call on governments to reduce military spending and instead address through cooperation and diplomacy the global challenges of our time, which require all available resources. The Appeal also calls for efforts aimed at global disarmament, stopping the arms trade and ceasing arms shipments to countries in conflict, demanding governments that they use all existing means to push for an end to all armed conflicts and the genocide in Gaza.
