S.P. Udayakumar, who risked freedom and even his life to oppose the planned nuclear reactors in southern India, could not travel to New York to receive his Nuclear-Free Future Award. But his words of resistance - delivered by a video recording - resonated with a rapt audience.

Tens of thousands of people over the years, including villagers, farmers, fishermen and even children, joined the struggle against the construction of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in India. Many of them were inspired by S.P. Udayakumar, who had to go into hiding at times and faced imprisonment and death threats.
