Only Four Councillors Voted to Continue Along Path to Sub-Sea Lake District Nuclear Dump

Dear Friends

We are aiming to raise money to send out a leaflet to all 250,000 households in Cumberland urging them to sign the petition for a full debate and vote by Cumberland Council.  The council are continuing along the route to a deep sub-sea nuclear dump (Geological Disposal Facility) up to the size of Bermuda on the say so of just four councillors.  The more people that sign the petition the better as the biggest development EVER in the UK (and the only sub-sea dump for very hot high level wastes in the world)  would impact more than Cumberland but the new ‘process’ means that only Cumberland Council can stop this plan in its tracks.  The longer Cumberland Council stay in the process the more £millions of public money are entrenching the obscene plan on the vulnerable Lake District coast.   Public money is being lavished on anything and everything with funding of up to £2 million “made available” year on year for the Mid Copeland and South Copeland GDF Community Partnerships  as they participate “in the siting process for a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF). The grants can be used to fund projects, schemes or initiatives benefiting the Search Area that: provide economic opportunities
enhance the natural and built environment, or
improve community wellbeing.”

The funding for continuing on the toxic path doubles once deep borehole investigations begin.

We want to send a message to Cumberland Council that continuing on this route towards an experimental sub-sea nuclear dump jeopardising the safety and wellbeing of Cumbria and our neighbouring countries across the Irish Sea and Solway without even a full debate and vote is undemocratic and ethically wrong.

If you can help by sharing the petition and or the crowdfund please do – we are up against massive vested interests, slick advertising (a GDF would be “safe”)  and it is clear that Cumbria is seen as the line of least resistance in “delivery of a geological disposal facility” aka a deep, very hot, and gargantuan nuclear dump under the Lake District coast.

Many Thanks!

Marianne
