Dear all,

I hope you are keeping well. It has been impressive to see so many of you push back on the Eurobomb debate. With the NPT Conference coming up later this month, there will be more reasons to talk about it in political forums. In the meantime, and to complement what you are all doing, we produced a video that we will upload on all our channels in the next days. Here is the tweet/X-post to start with:

1/ In these uncertain times, some argue that nuclear weapons are the answer to Europe’s security. The future of Europe will not be written in the shadow of mushroom clouds but by those who believe in dialogue, diplomacy and disarmament. #NuclearBan

Dear friends,

I hope you are all doing well. Excuse my absence in the call on Thursday, but as I heard from Susi and Daniel it was a very productive meeting and lots of great energy and eagerness to push back on the reckless increase of rhetoric around nuclear proliferation in Europe and beyond.

May I also say that I am impressed how many of you have begun to take this up in their work, including at 3MSP with the statement presented by Jean-Marie and Juliane as well as in media work over the last week. If you are featured in any publications, even in your local languages, please feel free to send them through and we can try our best to amplify them as much as possible. Keep up the good work!

To follow up from last week and to try to support your efforts:

  1. We have published an overview article about these developments here: https://www.icanw.org/encouraging_nuclear_proliferation_in_europe
  2. We compiled some talking points here: https://www.icanw.org/european_proliferation_talking_points These are a direct response to the increase in proliferation rhetoric and are hopefully useful for your in any media work, own publications or conversations with politicians and officials, especially as they prepare for the upcoming 3rd preparatory committee of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty taking place from 28 April to 9 May.
  3. Further, let me also share some more resources as background and complementary materials:
    1. Lets be Realists: answers to common comments and questions about nuclear weapons: https://www.icanw.org/lets_be_realists
    2. Five myths of nuclear deterrence: https://www.icanw.org/deterrence_myths
    3. Surge: 2023 Global Nuclear Weapons Spending: https://www.icanw.org/surge_2023_global_nuclear_weapons_spending?utm_campaign=press_release_spending_2023&utm_medium=email&utm_source=ican
    4. FAQ on the “Eurobomb”: https://www.icanw.org/faq_eurobomb
    5. The statement at 3MSP on European proliferation: https://reachingcriticalwill.org/images/documents/Disarmament-fora/nuclear-weapon-ban/3msp/statements/7March_ICAN_securityconcerns.pdf

Please feel free to use any of these as much as possible, good to keep our websites up to date and lively with what’s happening. If we play this well, we can establish ourselves as the authoritative voice in this debate. Let’s be in touch as much as possible.

Best,

Florian
