From today's ICAN Europe Meeting

Posted: 21st March 2025

In contrast to the generally grim nuclear news there was very upbeat feedback from the third meeting of TPNW states – signs of a growing worldwide movement with the younger generation playing a key part. For Janet Fenton’s reflections on the New York meeting see https://securescotland.substack.com/p/nae-nukes-anywhere.

The Prep Com of the NPT is in May and this gives us every opportunity to remind politicians and people that the UK has joined the other nuclear-armed states which are signatories in undermining the treaty they herald as the “cornerstone” for disarmament. Useful ICAN material on this at https://www.icanw.org/new_research_35_states_are_sabotaging_the_npt and Assessing Compliance with the NPT: A Legal Analysis. I was not aware that there is either a practice or a requirement for signatories to the NPT to consult with civil society before attend at a treaty meeting – worth digging into that.

I told the group about the Lakenheath camp
