After weeks of negotiations, the Met police are still blocking our right to protest outside the BBC this weekend. They are trying to justify their crackdown by citing the potential disruption to a nearby synagogue, yet the nearest synagogue is not located on the march route. The absence of any direct risk to the synagogue in question makes the police’s actions all the more troubling.
Over the past few months, there has been a noticeable uptick in police responses to our peaceful demonstrations. These protests are an expression of opposition to what many—including human rights organisations—have deemed acts of genocide.
Instead of protecting our civil liberties, we are witnessing increasing police suppression of voices that are standing in solidarity with the Palestinians. Equally concerning is the BBC’s role in downplaying or misrepresenting these protests, particularly when it comes to the framing of the situation in Palestine. In a landmark investigation, Owen Jones exposed how the BBC and its Middle East editor skewed stories in favor of Israel’s narratives and repeatedly dismissed internal objections by staff demanding that the network uphold its commitment to impartiality and fairness.
The right to protest against an ongoing genocide and to demand accountability from those responsible is a fundamental human right that must be protected at all costs. Stop the War has and will continue to campaign for Palestine, against arms sales to Israel and in defence of our civil liberties. But for that we need your support. The simplest way to do that is by becoming a member. We are offering a reduced membership fee for a year for just £25 – normally £36 – if you join before the 31st of January 2025. This offer will only last until the end of January 2025.
We will be marching this Saturday and we urge each and every one of our supporters to become a member, join the march and make it as big and successful as possible.
