The Government Accountability Office has issued a damning report criticizing the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for failing to consider how the climate crisis will affect reactor safety. And Indigenous representatives made a plea for restitution at a thematic hearing before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

Nuclear regulator delinquent

A new GAO report has reprimanded the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for failing to factor in extreme weather effects brought on by the climate crisis when assessing reactor safety. As Beyond Nuclear has pointed out, the NRC has even claimed that climate change is “beyond the scope” of the agency. Beyond Nuclear is challenging the license extension of the Oconee reactors sitting downstream of two precarious dams based on the NRC failure to prepare for flooding. READ MORE

Indigenous plea for justice

Representatives from Indigenous communities from the American West made their case before human rights commissioners asking that the radiological contamination of their air, land and waters and the ensuing sicknesses and displacement be recognized and remediated. Frustrated at inaction, the speakers reminded federal officials present that their requests have fallen on deaf ears for decades. READ MORE
