Imprisoned drone whistleblower Daniel Hale released to home confinement
------------
From Kevin Gosztola, The Dissenter: Drone whistleblower Daniel Hale was released from prison in February after spending 33 months in some of the harshest confinement conditions ever imposed on a person for disclosing classified information to the press. He remains in federal custody but is living in home confinement until July. Though President Donald Trump’s Justice Department indicted Hale, his case became the first major Espionage Act conviction secured by prosecutors under President Joe Biden.

* Nuclear resister Susan Crane sentenced to 229 days in a German prison
------------
Susan Crane, an 80-year-old Catholic Worker from Redwood City, California, was sentenced to 229 days in a German prison for protesting the U.S. nuclear weapons stationed at Germany’s Büchel Air Force Base. She participated in a series of fence-cutting actions and occupations of the base beginning in 2018. As a result of convictions on misdemeanor charges of trespass and damage to the chain-link fence, Crane was fined a total of twenty-five-hundred euros. Because she refused to admit guilt or pay, a court ordered her to report on June 4 to Rohrbach penitentiary in southwest Germany. Her prison sentence is the longest ever imposed in the 25-year-long series of rallies, protests, marches, peace camps and civil resistance directed at the NATO nuclear weapons base. Dozens of Germans, as well as two other U.S. citizens and one Dutch national have done prison time in Germany for related go-in actions.

* Ceasefire arrests across the U.S. and Canada now top 4,500
------------
Last October, the Nuclear Resister began compiling a chronicle of arrests of people calling for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas and an end to the occupation. Two months later, we published this day-by-day account (https://nukeresister.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5e793916f1979bfc73458af19&id=7a925e2ab1&e=3a35ade283)  of more than 2,400 such arrests in the U.S. and Canada in issue #202 of the Nuclear Resister newsletter. As of April 1, 2024, this chronicle has nearly doubled to include more than 4,500 arrests at over 175 actions in 75 cities and towns across 36 states and four provinces. Full reporting on this ongoing war resistance will be featured in the next issue of the Nuclear Resister, due out later this spring. * Good Friday actions at the Pentagon, Lockheed Martin and Nevada nuclear test site

* PENTAGON

Early in the morning of March 29, Good Friday, about 40 activists held a nonviolent witness at the Pentagon to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and to call for an end to the crucifixion of people today. One of their banners quoted the late renowned peacemaker, Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen: “Nuclear Arms Are The Global Crucifixion Of Jesus.” Four of the group were arrested after blocking an entrance used by Pentagon workers, while supporters sang nearby. The four were processed, charged with “interfering with government agency functions and disobeying a lawful order.” They were released by Pentagon police with a June 6 court date.

LOCKHEED MARTIN

On Good Friday, after walking from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia to Lockheed Martin in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, peace activists held a rally. Twenty-five of the people gathered then crossed onto the property of war profiteer Lockheed Martin. Soon they were arrested – some while lying in the road holding a list of the over 13,000 children who have been killed since October 7, 2023, and others while holding a banner reading, “Lockheed Martin, you have blood on your hands.” Arrestee Ariel Gold, executive director of Fellowship of Reconciliation-USA, later wrote, “Over the past almost six months, Lockheed Martin’s fighter jets have been the instruments of death dropping bomb after bomb on Palestinian children, women, and men.”

NEVADA NUCLEAR TEST SITE

The Nevada Desert Experience’s annual 65-mile Sacred Peace Walk concluded the pilgrimage from Las Vegas on March 29, Good Friday, with an action at the Nevada National Security Site. When the peace walkers approached the boundary line of the nuclear test site, Beth Blattenberger, of Salt Lake City, Utah, quietly continued walking across the line and was arrested for trespass. Jeanne Firth, of Louisville, Kentucky, also crossed the line and was arrested. Jeremiah Jones, of the Western Shoshone Nation, had welcomed all of the walkers and given them permission to enter the Western Shoshone traditional lands, which the test site occupies in violation of the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley.

Three arrests at Creech drone base
------------
On the morning of March 27, during an anti-drone warfare protest, 89-year-old retired pastor George Killingsworth of Berkeley, California was arrested for drawing a peace sign with chalk on a large boulder near the gate of Creech Air Force Base in Indian Springs, Nevada. He was charged with defacing public property and released outside the base. Karen Pettit of Las Vegas, Nevada and Sylver Pondolfino of Staten Island, New York were also arrested while blocking traffic at the drone base. They were taken to the Clark County Jail in Las Vegas, charged with failure to disperse and later released. The actions were part of the Nevada Desert Experience’s annual Sacred Peace Walk.

* London activist writes messages on Ministry of Defence building
------------
On March 13, Ray Towey marked the Ministry of Defence in London, as a witness against the nuclear war preparations of the U.K. government. The police arrived after he had written several messages along with the sign of the cross in black chalk under the MoD plaque: “Trident is Genocide” and “Choose Life not Terror”. Towey, a member of Catholic Peace Action, was stopped, arrested and then released without charges. He was required to provide information, told not to return to the Ministry of Defence, and sent on his way.  “Go away and come back to write another day,” one of the officers said.
