War In Ukraine / NATO

  • The US revealed Tuesday that talks between the US and Russia on resuming mutual inspection regimes under the New Start treaty – which has been on hiatus since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Trident

  • The North West Evening Mail picks up on the story of the fire which broke out onboard a British nuclear-armed submarine. CND also has a news item on on our website.

  • The Royal Navy has denied claims made by a whistleblower to STV, that staff at the nuclear weapons depot at Coulport had to be evacuated after a radiation leak.

  • The Mirror has a report on the laying of a wreath at the Cenotaph by British nuclear test vets and their descendents. They later held a protest at the MoD which coincided with the 65th anniversary of Operation Grapple X, Britain’s first H-bomb.

  • The Guardian reports on US pressure on Australia, over the latter’s recent change in stance on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Canberra switched from voting against the treaty to abstaining – reversing five “of blanket opposition” by the previous Coalition government. The US embassy said the treaty “would not allow for US extended deterrence relationships, which are still necessary for international peace and security.”

UK Nuclear Power

  • Dr Paul Dorfman recently appeared on GB News to discuss the UK government’s denial that funding for Sizewell C was on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s budgetary chopping block. You can watch the segment on YouTube.

  • Finland will continue to get nuclear fuel from Russia until its current contracts run out in 2027 and 2030.

  • The Telegraph looks at rising French electricity prices as problems continue to arise with EDF’s fleet of nuclear plants. It says the risk of energy shortages have risen as a result.

Iran Nuclear Deal

  • Al Jazeera looks at North Korea’s nuclear-capable arsenal amid a bumper year of ballistic missile tests.

Fukushima

  • Japan has so far spent around $82 billion on dealing with the 2011 Fukushima disaster, according to sources at Japan’s Board of Audit.

RadWaste

  • A new interim storage site for low and intermediate-level radioactive waste has begun operating in Studsvik near Nyköping, Sweden.
