President Putin’s latest announcement of calling up 300,000 extra reservists has been accompanied by threats of the use of nuclear weapons as a response to western intervention.
This marks the biggest escalation of the war since it broke out 7 months ago on February 24th. As Chris Nineham, co-founder of the Stop the War Coalition writes in our latest column;
βIt makes chillingly clear once again that we are nearer to great power nuclear confrontation than at any time for generations.
It also shows in the starkest possible way that the current Western strategy of backing the Ukrainian army by pumping vast amounts of weapons into the country, huge numbers of troops into the region and by economically isolating Russia is inflaming the war and risking further catastrophe.β
