ICAN_UK and TPNW Supporters Meeting

Event Date: 18th January 2024
Location: Internet 13:00 - 14:30 GMT

Dear ICAN and TPNW campaigners in Scotland and rUK,

We look forward to seeing all of you who can join TOMORROW’s meeting. We’re going to record this for the notetaker (thank you Lucy!), so if you are unable to attend and would like to have the recording link please let me know ([email protected]).

I’m pasting and attaching the agenda for tomorrow, and resending the link to Reaching Critical Will’s roundup analysis from 2MSP, which you can also access – along the major documents and statements and other ’Nuclear Ban Daily’ reports at: https://reachingcriticalwill.org/disarmament-fora/nuclear-weapon-ban/2msp

The zoom link for our meeting on Thursday is pasted for convenience below the agenda.

And below that I have forwarded Lucero Oyarzun’s helpful email where you can find ideas, social media materials etc for amplifying the TPNW’s EIF Day on Monday 22nd Jan titled What are you doing next Monday for the TPNW’s 3rd anniversary of entry into force?

Look out for emails from ICAN staff including Lucero on getting media attention for the TPNW also in the context of the Doomsday Clock announcement scheduled for next Tuesday (23rd).

Looking forward to seeing and hearing from you tomorrow,
Rebecca, Gari, Janet and Ben.

ICAN_UK and TPNW Supporters MeetingAGENDA
Thursday 18 January 2024 from 1.00 – 2.30 pm by Zoom

Note: Meetings are for information exchange and strategising among ICAN partners and other TPNW supporters, not for collective decision-making. Our focus is to increaseoutreach and awareness of the TPNW, and increase our overall effectiveness to influence UK nuclear policies towards challenging the stranglehold of nuclear deterrence theories, scrapping the Trident programme, joining the TPNW and contributing to the irreversible elimination of all nuclear weapons.

With this agenda we attach the summary from 2MSP from Reaching Critical Will/WILPF and the social media advice for the 3rd anniversary of the TPNW entry into force from Lucero/ICAN. We also encourage as many of you as possible to share your reports and plans for the coming year in writing to this list before we meet or if you cannot attend this 18 January meeting.
Chair: Rebecca; Note-taker: Lucy
14.00 Welcome
1) TPNW and its 2MSP (second meeting of states parties)
Kickoff reflections on 2MSP and its outcomes, with emphasis on takeaways for further TPNW activism in 2024-5
(5 minutes each from Lucy Harrow, Aine Beattie, Ben Donaldson, Justine Bonpierre)
Discussion
2) TPNW 3rd Entry-into-Force day 22nd January
Reports from participants on plans and ideas in the works.
Discussion on what else TPNW advocates could do? (see some ideas from Lucero/ICAN)
3) Taking the TPNW forward locally, nationally and internationally in 2024
2024 will be an election year in UK, amid increasingly visible impacts of climate destruction and horrendous wars in which Russian, NATO and Israeli nuclear threats and weapons are ever present, while the UK continues to give or sell arms to some belligerents and recently got directly involved in US decision to bomb Yemen. This session needs to focus on strategic and practical ideas on how we can make the connections, challenge the ‘deterrence’ justifications for UK and NATO to keep nuclear weapons, highlight humanitarian and climate impacts of militarism and nuclear weapons, and engage with the public, MPs (and prospective parlimentary candidates) and councillors to commit to humanitarian security, nuclear disarmament and the TPNW.
Kickoff analysis and ideas (Ben Donaldson, Janet Fenton) followed by Discussion
4) Next Meetings
5) AOB

Hi everyone,

Hoping you’ve all had a good start to this year and are ready for some action on the TPNW

On Monday we’re celebrating 3 years since the TPNW entered into force. In past years we have seen incredible events, photoshoots and actions around the world on this date and we hope that will also be the case this year. I’m reaching out to talk about our plans a bit and ask about yours.

From ICAN’s side, we will be working with local partners on Monday to urge the Swiss government to sign and ratify the Treaty, which – as you know – has been long delayed despite being mandated by parliament. We are still ironing out the details, and expect it will be more of a small photoshoot than a rally, but we look forward to sharing the photos with you on our social media when it’s done. Meanwhile, Melissa will be in Japan to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, meet with survivors and local partners and speak to the Japanese press about the significance and urgency of joining the treaty. And we will of course be making a big fuss about the big day across all our digital channels

We will also be sending round a small action kit this Thursday, with some potential social media graphics, banner ideas and media talking points, so you still have some time to translate or customise them. Particularly if you cannot make it to any local in person events, please consider sharing things on social media, and asking your supporters to do the same.

Now we want to hear from you: do you have any actions, parties, webinars or other events planned? As always, we love amplifying your actions and voices on the day itself, and will be keeping an eye out on social media. But it really helps us prepare, and it inspires others, if you can send us your ideas in reply to this email.

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Best,

Lucero Oyarzun (she/her)
