On January 24, 2023, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists set the hands of the ‘Doomsday Clock’ to 90 Seconds to Midnight indicating the extremely high risks of climate collapse and nuclear war, especially in light of increased tensions and armed conflicts involving nuclear-armed States.
Initiatives for nuclear weapons prohibition and elimination through the Non-Proliferation Treatyand the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons have been blocked or rejected by nuclear armed and allied countries because: a) these countries continue to rely on nuclear deterrence to address the threats (and realities) of armed aggression and to exert national interests, and b) the political power of the nuclear weapons industry.
New opportunities and initiatives for progress which address these issues have arisen, including in the UN General Assembly, UN Human Rights Council, G20 Summits, upcoming UN Summit of the Future and regional processes. In this event, we will discuss:
