The Ongoing Nakba: Palestinian Refugee Politics from 1948 to Now with Dr Anne Irfan

The Nakba is often spoken of as a historical event, but for millions of Palestinians its consequences continue to shape everyday life.

In this webinar, historian Dr Anne Irfan will explore the history and politics of Palestinian displacement from 1948 to the present day. Drawing on her extensive research, she will examine the evolution of the Palestinian refugee experience, the role of the international refugee system, and what the ongoing Nakba means in today’s political and humanitarian context.

Dr Anne Irfan is a historian and lecturer at University College London, specialising in the history and politics of Palestinian displacement. She is the author of Refuge and Resistance: Palestinians and the International Refugee System (Columbia University Press, 2023) and A Short History of the Gaza Strip (Simon & Schuster, 2025). Her work has appeared in leading academic journals including the Journal of Palestine Studies, Journal of Genocide Research, Journal of Refugee Studies and Jerusalem Quarterly, and she has contributed to media outlets including Al Jazeera, The Nation, +972 Magazine and Jewish Currents.
