Invitation to meet the director after a fascinating film, "Gentle Angry Women"
Event Date: 11th March 2026
Location: Abbey Cinema, Abingdon
Dear Peace Group supporters,
Having just invited the mayor and councillors of Abingdon, it’s only right that you should also receive this invitation, and also the request to reach out to young people you know in Abingdon who might like to come. We would especially like to get in touch with sixth-formers at our local schools, both state schools and private, so if you have any contacts, please pass this email on to them, or better still, talk to them about it! This is a real opportunity to raise the awareness of the next generation, not only about the ever-present dangers of nuclear weapons, but about the value, joy and empowerment to be found in non-violent direct action. Let’s fill the Abbey Cinema!
We are delighted that the Abbey Cinema has agreed to screen an important film made by a small independent film company from Cornwall. It follows 3 very different teenagers, from London, Cornwall and South Wales, on a journey to recreate the “Walk for Life on Earth” which culminated in the setting up of Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp in 1981.
Many of us in Abingdon Peace Group were regular visitors to the camp, taking food and taking our turn on “Night Watch” so that the women living there could sleep undisturbed. The nuclear-armed Cruise Missiles they were protesting left after only 9 years, but the camp stayed on until the common was returned to public access, as a beacon of nonviolent protest but also of women’s empowerment.
The young women in the film had heard of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at school, but were completely ignorant of Greenham Common. Watching them find the parallels between the events there and their own lives of activism today is fascinating.
The director, Barbara Santi, will lead a Q&A after the film which runs for 1 hour 3 minutes. Tickets are already on sale here:
https://theabbey.ac/web?film=69305a89c14e512383ae5cd0 and we are trying to reach out to the youth of Abingdon, so any help or suggestions you may have as to how to contact young people would be gratefully received.
We have also invited Layla Moran MP.
If you would like to come, please book yourself a ticket or tickets and bring your grandchildren!
If you are unable to come, would you like to pay for a teenager’s ticket? Even at the student rate, with the booking fee the tickets come to £12 which may be beyond the reach of some young people.
Thanks for any help you can give,
In peace,
Sally Reynolds
