The transatlantic partnership between the United States and Western Europe that developed after World War 2 was built on shared values and responses to shared threats. Today, as war continues to rage between Russia and Ukraine – encroaching on NATO’s eastern border – and threats to democracy gain strength on both sides of the Atlantic, the future of that partnership is being tested yet again.

PWH is pleased to host a conversation with and between two eminent leaders to discuss the future of transatlantic relations. Amy Gutmann, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany, and Robert Habeck, former Vice Chancellor of Germany, will discuss whether the transatlantic partnership depends on the future of democracy and economic stability in Germany, the United States, and throughout Europe. How should the alliance deal with issues like war in Europe and the immediate threat to Ukrainian democracy and sovereignty? What is the right response to democratic backsliding in major European countries and the United States?
