Building a Nuclear Weapons Free World

Event Date: 17th October 2025
Location: St. Ethelburga’s Centre for Peace and Security, 78 Bishopsgate, London EC2N 4AG, 6:30pm

Medact is hosting a free evening lecture and conversation about a nuclear weapons free world

T-minus two weeks until we host our upcoming evening lecture, conversation, and drinks reception – Building a Nuclear Weapons Free World. Join us in London on Saturday 1st November from 6:30pm, for a very special event, organised by the Nuclear Weapons Group, free and open to all!

Join us to hear from Dr Carlos Umaña – co-president of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, and an expert in nuclear disarmament campaigning – as well as three young UK-based campaigners from the nuclear disarmament and anti-militarism movement with experience organising within Students for Global HealthBASICMETO, and Youth for TPNW. We’ll be introducing each of them in the coming days, but for now, here’s a reminder to register, and more about our keynote speaker!

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Carlos Umaña

Carlos is a general practitioner, former local health director, and epidemiological surveillance officer with the Costa Rican Ministry of Health. Serving as IPPNW co-president, he is also on the ICAN International Steering Group. He is the current president of IPPNW Costa Rica, founder of Artists for Peace (2014) in Costa Rica, and president of the activist group “Peace and Diversity”. He is also the recipient of the 2018 “Alan Turing LGBTIQ Visibility Award” for Social Organization.

Since 2013, he has worked by campaigning and lobbying for awareness on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons (HINW) and support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

 Adrián Quiroga. “la Caixa” Foundation.

Personally, I’m really excited to see Medact members come together for this – a rich introduction into the world of campaigning for the total abolition of weapons of mass destruction, and a chance to connect in-person with other health workers, students and campaigners, especially as we move into the colder season. Do join us, and tell a friend to tell a friend!

The event is free to attend, however please register as soon as possible to help us make sure we’ve got enough refreshments to go round

An evening celebrating the memory of Dr Martin Hartog (1931–2023)

This event is made possible thanks to the generous donation of a founding member of Medact, the late Dr Martin Hartog (1931–2023). Martin was a member of the Royal College of Physicians, the first chair of Medact, and an active member of the Nuclear Weapons Group until his death in July 2023. Martin believed strongly in supporting students, younger campaigners and activists to join the disarmament movement, and we hope for this event to welcome many of those young campaigners.

In solidarity,

Sarah Lasoye (she/her)
