Hiroshima 80th anniversary in Abingdon
Event Date: 6th August 2025
Location: 7.30pm round the Peace Pole in the garden of St Ethelwolds House
Dear Peace Group supporter,
On August 6th it will be 80 years since the power of the atom was unleashed on the city of Hiroshima in Japan – and 3 days later on Nagasaki.
We will be marking this sad milestone with two events:
1. A stall in the market-place on Saturday 2nd August from 10 to 12, with photos of Hiroshima and a leaflet to hand out to passers-by.
2. A lantern-floating on the evening of Weds 6th August, starting at 7.30pm round the Peace Pole in the garden of St Ethelwolds House, then proceeding to the river to float the lanterns from Hiroshima and some candles.
We need your help! Is there any chance you could:
- Save your clear plastic hummus-pots or equivalent and bring them to the market place or drop them off at Sally’s house (or I can collect – text me!)?
- Help set up the stall & display, give out leaflets or man the stall in the market place on Saturday 2nd for a while between 10am and 12noon?
- Bake a cake or nibbles to welcome people to the exhibition in St Eth’s Garden on Weds 6th?
- Come and help put out chairs, plates and glasses on Weds 6th at 7pm?
- Help clear up after the lantern floating?
- Invite your friends and neighbours to the lantern-floating?
The invitation is attached. There will be a separate leaflet to give out on 2nd August.
See you then?
AND ALSO: An Abingdon resident, Jane Peart, herself an artist, has organised a sale of fine art prints in aid of the United Nations Gaza Appeal. It will happen on Saturday August 16th 9.30 – 5 in St Michael in Northgate, Cornmarket Street, Oxford. Can you come, and invite your friends? Flier attached.
Thanks,
Sally
